Matte vs. Glossy Wrapping Paper: Which Should You Choose?

Matte vs. Glossy Wrapping Paper: Which Should You Choose?

When it comes to gift wrap, the finish you choose can change the entire feel of a gift. While the design catches your eye, the finish adds that final touch - soft and subtle, or polished and striking.

What's the Difference?

Glossy wrapping paper has a smooth, reflective finish that catches light and makes colors appear brighter and deeper. It’s ideal for bold prints, festive moments, and occasions where you want your wrap to feel elevated and eye-catching.

Matte wrapping paper has a soft, non-reflective surface. It gives a more muted, refined feel, perfect for minimalist designs, neutral palettes, and understated elegance. Some customers love matte for the tactile quality and the ease of pairing with twine, velvet ribbon, or handwritten tags.

When to Use Each

  • Choose glossy for birthdays, celebrations, holidays, and any design-forward wrap. It enhances color and detail beautifully.
  • Choose matte (when available) for solid colors, neutral schemes, or cozy textures, especially weddings, fall gifting, or quiet luxury looks.

How Everly & Elm Curates Finishes

We match each design to the finish that suits it best. Most patterns are offered in glossy only to showcase their color and clarity. When matte becomes available, especially for solids, it will be clearly marked and easy to select.

Whether you prefer a gleam of gloss or a soft, velvety wrap, we make sure every roll feels intentional and pairs beautifully with our coordinating ribbons and tags.
